Is there a second chance for those who died without knowing the Bible or the gospel?

death resurrection

Let us examine carefully whether the doctrine that teaches that unbelievers in Jesus and those who did not have the opportunity to study the Bible during their lifetime are sent to hell without exception is biblical. In fact, the Bible does not engage in such rhetoric, but rather teaches that unbelievers who lived good lives can also be saved.

Biblical Basis for Second Chance Theory

Ezekiel 16:53 "When I bring back their captives, the captives of Sodom and her daughters, and the captives of Samaria and her daughters, then I will also bring back the captives of your captivity among them, 54 that you may bear your own shame and be disgraced by all that you did when you comforted them. 55 When your sisters, Sodom and her daughters, return to their former state, and Samaria and her daughters return to their former state, then you and your daughters will return to your former state.

Matthew 11:20 Then He began to rebuke the cities in which most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent: 21 "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you."

Ultimately, Revelation shows that Sodom, Tyre , Sidon, Nineveh, and extenuating sinners will be resurrected, and many of them will accept God.

Matthew 12:41 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here. 42 The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.

1 Corinthians 5:5 deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

1 Corinthians 11:31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

These verses indicate that sinners during their lifetime will be judged during their lifetime and will be resurrected in the future because they have received the wages of their sins in the sleep of death. In Enoch 22, the spirits of the dead are divided into four categories, one of which is the righteous and three of which are the unrighteous and sinners. The spirits of one of the three categories of sinners will be resurrected.

As indicated in the above scripture, there are those who die an unreasonable death during their lifetime, or who are resurrected after pleading and suing for mercy under God's judgment. Many people believe that teaching a second chance by naming it "second chance" is unbiblical, but it is clear that the Bible itself describes death as deliverance from sin. The law of Romans 6:7,23, which teaches that "the wages of sin is death, and he who dies is free from sin," makes it clear that extenuating circumstances, those who died without knowing Jesus, etc., are not being left alive in hell, as the popular church teaches. (Spiritual immortality is bogus to begin with.)

Revelation 21:7 He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.

In particular, the Greek word for "nations" in chapter 21:24 is ethnos, a word often used to refer to Gentiles, or unbelievers. Since the establishment of the New Testament, Christians have been symbolically represented as Israel, while unbelievers are often described as ethnos.

The point is that Scripture prophesies that the Gentiles of the nations who have been resurrected in verse 7, that is, unbelievers who are sinners, will also conquer evil and come to accept Christ's redemption and God, as in verse 24. The polemic that "anyone who doesn't believe automatically goes to hell" is not entirely what the Bible teaches.

If you read from Luke 10:25, the kind and good pagan Samaritan who helped the Jews is vindicated by Jesus, while the Jews who know God are repudiated. Matthew 25:34-40 describes an unbeliever who shows kindness to Jesus without knowing that he is His brother, James 2:13 describes "mercy overcomes judgment," and Romans 2:10-15 shows that God favors unbelievers who live conscientiously and are saved. In Joshua 1, Rahab, a prostitute, is privileged to become an ancestor of Jesus by sheltering the spies of Israel.

Ruth 2:20 Then Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, "Blessed be he of the Lord, who has not forsaken His kindness to the living and the dead!" And Naomi said to her, "This man is a relation of ours, one of our close relatives."

Luke10:33 But a certain Samaritan(Samaritan is regarded as a paganism), as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.' 36 So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?" 37 And he said, "He who showed mercy on him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

Romans 2:10 but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 11 For there is no partiality with God. 12 For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law 13 (for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified; 14 for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, 15 who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them) 16 in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.

James2:13 For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

Thus, even unbelievers can be saved by showing goodness and kindness to sincere people who are in need. In conclusion, we can read from the Bible that good people who do not know God like a samaritan will be resurrected as righteous people, while there is hope of resurrection for sinners with extenuating circumstances who perish during their lifetime even thoug they will not be blessed like a rigtheous one. If this is called the second chance theory, it is a biblical doctrine.

It's not fair to know the gospel after you're dead?

There may be people who occasionally state something like this. I have not met one yet, but I think I overheard one somewhere. Please read carefully the parable in Matthew 20:1-16.

In this parable, God gives the same amount of reward to the servant who has served Him for a long time and to the servant who has served Him only for a short time. The servant who has served for a long time doesn't like it and complains, "Why should I be paid the same amount as the servant who has only worked for a short time?

The gospel is a free gift, and there is no valid reason why the righteous who have struggled without knowing God should not be rewarded. Since it is said that we will be judged by looking deep into the heart of each individual, it is very possible that those who do not know God, who live good lives with good motives, will be blessed more than Christians.

Perhaps those who want to deny what is called a second chance, please ask yourself if you are in a state of mind that corresponds to the above parable. Then, consider whether you are able to love your neighbor as God loves without discrimination.

If you are truly happy after hearing the gospel and applying God's teachings for a long time, you would not make any of the above statements. Therefore, please specify that those who make statements to the above effect in opposition to second chances may be perceiving people from a petty point of view.

It is exactly as the saying goes, the first will be last and the last will be first in verse 16. Evangelism is the work to bring the Kingdom of Heaven to earth, and it is a mutual showing of love and kindness accompanied by healing and distribution to the poor. It is not an imposition of human criteria such as "if you don't believe now, you must be in a certain denomination or you will go to hell."
